V — Computations and Assumptions
The six reduced horizontal observations are averaged in arc-seconds:
Maximum horizontal spread:
Opposite-face vertical means:
Assumptions and conventions:
- Face-right readings are reduced to the same signed angular convention before averaging.
- Positive vertical angle is above the instrument horizontal; negative is below.
- Instrument centering and leveling are rechecked before each repeated set.
- Final angles are rounded to the instrument's 5″ least-count reporting context while preserving the computed mean.
VI — Remarks and Conclusions
A — Remarks
- Clear sight lines allowed all observations to be retained.
- Opposite-face sets reduce several instrumental and pointing effects but do not remove centering or target-plumbing error.
- Centering, pointing, target stability, and reading/booking are the main probable error sources.
B — Conclusion
The repeated observations support an adopted horizontal angle of 68°24′40″. The mean vertical angles are +6°12′18″ to C-01 and -3°08′42″ to D-01. The small opposite-face discrepancies indicate internally consistent classroom observations.
